Marla Schuerman left her name all over the Xavier soccer record book before she graduated. The striker started all 63 matches in her career at Xavier while running up scoring totals that placed her atop the Xavier scoring charts.
In all, Schuerman set five school records, three of which were surpassed by Amanda Gruber. Schuerman remains the leader in career shots (354) and shots in a match (15) and is second only to Gruber in the career assists, goals and points categories.
Schuerman racked up another first in Xavier history when she led Xavier's offensive output each of her four seasons.
Not coincidentally, the Xavier teams she played on were also quite successful. As a junior, Schuerman served as team captain and helped the Musketeers to the best start in school history as they went 8-0-0. The team broke into the "top 20" for awhile during her junior year, another XU first. As a senior, her year was highlighted by her team setting the school record for wins in a season as they finished the year at 14-3-2. Another highlight of her final two seasons is that XU recorded a perfect 2-0 record against rival Cincinnati. XU won 2-1 both years and Marla scored all four goals. Schuerman also netted the winning goals two straight years against Michigan State, including the clutch 1990 goal with 51 seconds left.
Schuerman took home plenty of hardware during her XU career. She was selected to the All-Region Team (Second Team in 1990 and First Team in 1991) and the first-ever All-MCC soccer team as a senior (First Team in 1991). She also earned a spot on the U.S. National Reserve team.
The soccer field was not the only place where Schuerman shined at Xavier. A chemistry major, Schuerman balanced her athletic career and academics en route to winning the Paul L. O'Connor Award that honors the top senior student-athlete at Xavier. Along with being honored at Xavier for athletic and academic excellence, Schuerman was the recipient of the 1991 Cecil Coleman Medal of Honor Award, which is awarded to the best female student-athlete in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. She also had a very unique summer job that had nothing to do with soccer. Schuerman spent her summers working for NASA on polymers that were used to replace metal on space shuttles.
