Tim Dydo lettered three years in football, earned a spot in the Legion of Honor and was Team Co-Captain in 1973.
Xavier completed its final football season in 1973. Senior quarterback Tim Dydo made sure the sport went out in style, winning style. Dydo led XU to victories over Northern Illinois (40-36), Villanova (13-6), and Toledo (35-31) at Corcoran Field, the last three football games in XU's storied football history.
The last quarterback to wear the Blue and White of Xavier was one of XU's best ever. Dydo finished his career second in all-time passing yardage (3,690) behind XU Hall of Famer Carroll Williams.
Dydo holds the XU records for most passing yards in a game (337 in 1972 versus Dayton), pass attempts in a game (60 versus Dayton in 1972), pass completions in a game (31 versus Dayton in 1972), pass attempts in a season (327 in 1972) and a career (658), and pass completions in a season (160 in 1972) and a career (324).
Dydo led the team in passing three straight seasons, hitting 50 of 104 (48.1%) for 577 yards and one touchdown as a sophomore. He improved his numbers to 160 of 327 (48.9%) for 1,568 yards and five touchdowns as a junior. As a senior, he connected on 114 of 227 (50.2%) for 1,545 yards and 14 touchdowns. The team's success followed Dydo's progress. XU finished 1-9 in 1971, 3-8 in 1972, and 5-5-1 in 1973.
There were many bright moments during Dydo's career, including junior year wins over Marshall (14-0), Cincinnati (19-7) and Morehead (26-7).
The three straight wins to end the 1973 season remain etched in the minds of XU football fans. The exciting season finale against Toledo provided the perfect season conclusion. XU trailed 31-28 with 11:12 left against Toledo, as Dydo calmly directed a 12-play, 80-yard drive for the winning touchdown with 4:25 left. Dydo fell on the ball to run out the final 27 seconds in XU football history. Dydo's final game effort included touchdown strikes of 58 yards to Bob Pickard in the first quarter and 30 yards to Terry Buda in the third quarter.
After his excellent senior season, Dydo was selected to play in the All-Ohio Shrine Bowl.
