CINCINNATI - Senior righty Greg Wiggers threw his second straight complete game shutout of an Atlantic 10 opponent as Xavier defeated Dayton, 3-0 in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday at Hayden Field.
Xavier is now 16-17-2 overall and 7-4 in the A-10 while Dayton falls to 11-26 overall and 1-12 in A-10 play.
Wiggers, who last Saturday shutdown George Washington 7-0, threw all seven innings and allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out five for his second complete game shutout of the season. In the game, he faced just three batters over the minimum and stretched his consecutive scorless innings streak to 17 2/3 innings over four appearances.
The Musketeers scored a run in the bottom of the third as senior Eric Greenwell walked and advanced to second on a balk. He then went to third on a groundout by Alec Moss before scoring on a sacrifice fly to centerfield sophomore Jay Johnson. The run scored was Greenwell's 24th of the season while the RBI was Johnson's 20th.
Xavier added two runs in the sixth on two hits as sophomore shortstop Brett Smith hit a bases-loaded single over a drawn in Flyer third baseman to drive in Johnson. Then junior Eric Armstrong drove in senior Mark Andres from third base with a sacrifice fly to centerfield, which made the score 3-0.
Johnson finished 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI and Smith was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Musketeer's offense.
Xavier and Dayton will conclude their Atlantic 10 series at Hayden Field on Sunday with a nine-inning game beginning at 2 p.m.
