XU Puts Together Best Showing of the Year at NCAA Qualifier

CINCINNATI, Ohio ? The Xavier University Rifle team seemingly took care of business at its NCAA Qualifier on Saturday, posting its highest score of the season and outscoring West Virginia, 4,646 ? 4,545 in the process at the Walsh Rifle Range in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The field for the 2005 NCAA Rifle Championship will be announced at a later date.
XU?s score of 2,324 in air rifle was its highest score of the season. A trio of Musketeers led the way in the air rifle portion of the competition as Hannah Kerr, Alice Reed and Brandon Czekaj each posted a score of 582. Brian Watson fired a solid score of 578 to round out XU?s season-high air rifle score.
The Musketeers also ran away from the Mountaineers in smallbore, outscoring West Virginia 2,322 ? 2,285. The 2,322 was the second-highest smallbore score the Musketeers have tallied this season.
Kerr also led the way for XU in smallbore, posting a match-high 591 including a perfect 200 in the prone segment of the smallbore competition. Rich Gauvin also posted a perfect 200 in prone and his total smallbore score was 583. Daniel Ault fired a 581 and Alice Reed rounded out the scoring with a 567.
Amy Smith led the way for WVU with scores of 580 and 575 in smallbore and air rifle respectively.
Saturday was XU?s official NCAA Qualifier date but the team will also be in action tomorrow to compete against Ohio State at the Walsh.
