PHILADELPHIA - Junior forward Amber Harris posted her fourth-consecutive double-double and junior center Ta'Shia Phillips and sophomore guard Tyeasha Moss each scored 14 points to lead the No. 14/12 Xavier University women's basketball team in a 73-47 thrashing of La Salle on Saturday afternoon at Tom Gola Arena in Philadelphia. With the win, Xavier improves to 12-3 on the year while the Explorers slip to 5-13.
Harris, who was recently selected to the John R. Wooden Award Top 20, scored 16 points and snatched 11 rebounds. Harris was a solid 6-of-10 from the floor and seven of her 11 boards came on the offensive glass. Harris, Xavier's all-time leader in blocked shots, also swatted a pair of shots.
Moss' 14 came on 5-of-9 shooting and she also chased down four rebounds and blocked a career-high two shots. Ta'Shia Phillips' 14 came on 6-of-10 shooting and she corralled eight rebounds. The Indianapolis native also recorded two assists, two steals and blocked two shots.
April Phillips scored eight points and was one rebound shy of a double-double while Philadelphia native Katie Rutan scored 11 points and dished-out three assists in her homecoming.
La Salle trailed by just two points, 9-7, after Chelsea Conner buried a long jumper with 13:30 remaining in the first half. However, the Musketeers outscored the Explorers 36-to-15 over the remainder of the first half and built a 45-22 lead at the half.
XU was especially dominant for a 7:20 stretch when it sprinted out to a convincing 22-4 run. Moss led the way for Xavier in the first half with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting. April Phillips added six points and hauled in seven rebounds (including three offensive rebounds in the same possession) and Amber Harris scored eight points on 3-for-4 shooting.
XU came out strong to start the second half as Ta'Shia Phillips and Harris combined to score 10 points in the first 2:40, helping to open up a 30-point lead, 55-25, with 17:20 to go. La Salle was never able to chip away at the Xavier lead with anything more than a rock hammer and XU led by as many as 36 points in the second half.
The Musketeers held a decided 50-to-29 advantage on the glass, including an 18-to-8 edge on the offensive glass. Xavier shot 42.2 percent from the floor but held the Explorers to just 29.8 percent.
Xavier will return to action on Wednesday, January 20 when the team welcomes Saint Louis to Cintas Center. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
