Kauffmann Earns Top Five Finish at A10's

PITTSBURGH- Tommy Kauffmann ended his senior campaign on a record-breaking note and a fifth place finish at the 2010 Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships. The men finished in sixth place in a tight race, ending only 35 points out of third place. The women battled and came in 10th place.
Senior Kauffmann ran his 8,000-meter race in 24:41 to earn the highest finish for any Xavier male in A-10 Championships since Dave Dickman was runner-up in 1999. Kauffmann was also named to the All-Conference Team for the third consecutive season. "Tommy was definately our highlight today," head coach Dan Flaute said. "He ran a really strong race throughout and it was great for him to finish out his senior year strong."
Junior Keith Albrektson was the second finisher for the Musketeers, coming in 23rd place with a time of 25:22. Sophomore Hank Geer ran a time of 25:32 to end in 30th place. Three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week Tom Ohlman earned 37th place in his first A-10 Championship race with a time of 25:41. Junior Ben Foley and senior and Joe Ryan finished with time of 25:57 and 26:32 respectively. Freshman Chris Hanson was the last XU male and finished with a time of 26:40.
Richmond won the men's side with 51 points with Duquesne and Massachusetts finishing behind with 64 and 112 points. Xavier finished with 147 points.
"I think our senior guys had a great effort today," Flaute said. "I really appreciate all of their hard work this season."
Richmond also won the women's race with 43 points followed by La Salle and Dayton with 68 and 75 points. XU finished with 216 points.
On the women's side, rookie Ashley Vincent was the third fastest freshman out of 139 runners. The Keller, Texas native came in 21st place with a time of 18:18. Abby Fischer came in 40th place with a time of 18:42 while junior Caylin Howell was six seconds back with a time of 18:48 to earn 47th place. Clare Fischer finished in a time of 18:53. Senior Caitlin Thomas ended with a time of 19:02. Rachel Clark and Jessica Albers were the final two XU women and finished in 19:11 and 19:22 respectively.
Flaute said of Thomas, "Caitlin is a really hard worker and has worked just as hard as anyone on the team this season. She is definately going to be missed next year."
