Two Musketeers Post Double-Doubles As XU Defeats Saint Joe's 63-56

CINCINNATI - Junior forward Amber Harris led all scorers with 23 points and posted 10 rebounds, and freshman guard Katie Rutan set a new record for 3-pointers as a freshman as the No. 6 Musketeers defeated Atlantic 10 rival Saint Joseph's 63-56 Wednesday at the Cintas Center. Ta'Shia Phillips also posted a double-double in the contest.
With the win, the Musketeers improve to 19-3 overall and a perfect 9-0 in the Atlantic 10. The Hawks fell to 12-12 overall and 4-4 in the A-10 with the loss.
Rutan broke former XU standout and current assistant coach Amy Waugh's record with 12:03 left in the game on a three pointer from the wing with two Hawks defenders attempting to deflect her shot.
The Hawks cut into the Xavier lead late in the in the game. Sophomore guard Katie Kuester hit a three from in front of the SJU bench to cut the score to 59-54 in favor of Xavier. The Hawks then forced an XU turnover to retain possession with 1:14 left.
Ashley Louge hit a layup with 55 seconds left in the game to cut the XU lead to three, 59-56. XU was forced to call their final timeout of regulation with 38.3 seconds left when Special Jennings was trapped at the half line by two Hawks defenders.
XU missed a shot attempt with 28 seconds left but a steal by Jennings followed by a couple SJU fouls put Jennings at the free throw line with 12.8 seconds left. The junior guard hit four free throws in the final seconds to seal the Xavier win.
Xavier got off to a hot with a 11-0 run to open the game. Ta'Shia Phillips scored four of the Musketeers' first seven on put back layups.
Saint Joseph's scored its first point of the game on a Michelle Baker jumper at the 13:26 mark in the first frame.
Dee Dee Jernigan earned four points off fast breaks in the early going. At the 15:05 mark she threaded through the Hawks' defense for a layup and at the 6:57 mark she earned a steal and drove 80 feet for a layup to give XU a 10-point lead at 19-9.
Harris helped extend the XU lead to 25-14 with a strong layup with 3:51 left to play in the first frame. Harris finished the first half with 12 points to lead all scorers in the first frame.
XU led 29-19 at the half. Following Harris in scoring was Ta'Shia Phillips and Tyesha Moss with six points each. SJU was led by Dominique Bryant with 5 points on 2-of-5 shooting. The Xavier defense was stifling in the first frame.
The Musketeers forced eight Hawks turnovers and held SJU to just 26.7 percent from the field. Ta'Shia Phillips started the second half in the same way she started the first, with two straight put back shots.
Harris finished the game with a double-double with 10 rebounds to go along with her 23 points. Ta'Shia Phillips was second in scoring for the Musketeers with 12 points and earned a double-double with 14 rebounds. SJU was led by Michelle Baker with 12 points.
The Musketeers return to action on February 13 as they travel to Pittsburgh to take on Duquesne in A-10 action. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
