CINCINNATI – Longtime Xavier golf coach Doug Steiner was honored by The First Tee of Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky as a Core Values Award honoree for sportsmanship on Thursday, March 24 at The Westin Cincinnati.
The 2015-16 season marks Steiner's 28th as the head men's golf coach at Xavier, a period that has included 34 tournament wins, eighth conference titles, five NCAA Tournaments and seven conference Coach of the Year awards. He has developed his golfers both on the course and in the classroom, producing 19 Academic All-Americans, 57 all-conference performers, 51 medalists, 12 conference players of the year and six conference rookies of the year.Â
Steiner also helped groom four Xavier alums currently playing professionally, including Jason Kokrak (PGA), Andy Pope (Web.com), Sebastian MacClean and Herbert Day (Latinoamerica).
Long a supporter of The First Tee and its mission to help introduce kids to golf and its inherent values, Steiner and his teams have run special clinics for TFT-GCNKY Eagle and Ace students as well as assisting at fundraising events.Â
Â
• Each year, The First Tee honors nine Cincinnatians whose achievements and dedication to the betterment of the community provide the examples young people need as they grow towarda thriving adulthood. Each of the award-winners embodies The First Tee Nine Core Values – confidence, courtesy, honesty, integrity, judgment, perseverance, respect, responsibility and sportsmanship – which the organization seeks to instill and nurture in the 1,000-plus kids who participate with The First Tee each year.
Â
"There is no other sport in which sportsmanship plays a bigger role than in golf, whether it's abiding by the rules, helping your opponent find a ball, or complimenting them on a great shot. The game should always be played with integrity, patience and humility. As in life, golfers must learn to understand and accept the good and the bad."
