Coaching veteran brings 18 years of experience to Xavier
CINCINNATI – Xavier head volleyball coach Christy Pfeffenberger has announced the hiring of Ed Tolentino as an assistant coach. Tolentino brings 18 years of coaching experience to the Musketeer program.
"I am blessed to have the opportunity to move back to the Midwest and be a part of Xavier, to work along with Coach Pfeffenberger, Amber and the rest of the program," said Tolentino. "I know that I will be able to contribute here with my experiences and offer my strengths to the program."
Tolentino joins Xavier following a one-year stint at the University of Connecticut. The Huskies went 16-15 (10-10 AAC) last year and had two players earn all-conference honors.
"I am thrilled Ed joined our staff," said Pfeffenberger. "He brings a whole new level of experience and fire that will help raise the bar for our student-athlete experience. He understands and believes in what we are doing here at Xavier and is a great addition for the program."
Prior to UCONN, Tolentino was on the coaching staff at Morehead State for two seasons. He helped the Eagles win their fourth straight Ohio Valley Conference title and make their second NCAA tournament appearance in 2013. The following season Tolentino was promoted to associate head coach.
From 2009-12, Tolentino was an assistant coach at Georgia Tech – helping the Yellow Jackets record 72 wins and advance to the NCAA Tournament in 2009. He assisted in coaching three players to AVCA All-America honors.
All told, Tolentino has assistant coaching stints at Georgia Tech, Michigan, Michigan State, Eastern Michigan and Madonna (Mich.). At Madonna, he helped guide the Crusaders to three straight conference championships and three national tournaments. He was also the head coach at Oakland University for three seasons (1999-2002).
Tolentino has also coached at the club level, where he was the master trainer for Premier Volleyball Academy in Maumee, Ohio and the M-Juniors in Ann Arbor, Mich.
He is currently a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and has presented several topics at the AVCA Convention. Tolentino had also been a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and had served as a minor league trainer for the Detroit Tigers Organization before dedicating his time to coaching volleyball.
"The program has always had a great legacy of players and coaches and I am proud to be on staff," added Tolentino. "I look forward to continuing the success that has been here and will work to raise the bar of our expectations on a daily basis."
The Musketeers open the 2016 season at the Illini Classic against Missouri State.
