Fitzpatrick is first XU freshman to earn all-conference honors since Shane Crutchfield in 2013
NEW YORK – Mikayla Fitzpatrick was named to the All-BIG-EAST First Team today leading up to the conference championship this weekend. The freshman from Phoenix leads the Musketeers in stroke average and rounds in the 60's.
The selections were made by the league's head coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own players.
"It feels like all of my hard work this season has paid off," Fitzpatrick said. "I desire to be the best I can be, and this is another milestone on that journey."
This marks the first time a Xavier women's golf freshman has earned all-conference honors since Shane Crutchfield in 2013 (CAA).
During the season, Fitzpatrick has played in the top position all year. The freshman finished in the top-25 five times, including a tie for eighth at the Rio Verde Invitational in her home state of Arizona. Her season low 69 (-2) came in the second round of the Yale Intercollegiate.
Fitzpatrick comes into the BIG EAST Championship sixth in stroke average in the conference (76.46).
"I expect to do well in this tournament," Fitzpatrick said. "I really like the course and especially the greens. I think our team has a pretty good chance. We have grown so much this spring season, and I think this could be where it all comes together."
First round of the BIG EAST Championship gets underway tomorrow morning at Callawassie Island Golf Course in South Carolina.
