Department breaks 3.3 mark for the first time in Spring 2017
CINCINNATI – Xavier Athletics closed out another strong year off the playing court in 2016-17, posting a department record-high grade-point average for the entire student-athlete population.
Xavier's 254 student-athletes posted a 3.318 GPA for the Spring 2017 semester, marking the first time the department broke the 3.30 mark for an entire semester. Coupled with a mark of 3.299 for the Fall 2016 semester, the department posted an academic year GPA of 3.308, also a department best.
"Our student-athletes continue to set the bar higher each year, in the classroom, on the field and in the community," said Greg Christopher, Xavier Director of Athletics. "Surpassing a department GPA of 3.30 is a testament not only to the hard work and commitment of our student-athletes, but to the dedication of our Student-Athlete Academic Support Services staff."
Over 75 percent of Xavier's student-athletes earned a 3.0 or above for Spring 2017, including 107 student-athletes who earned Dean's List honors by earning a 3.50 or above. Additionally, 17 Xavier student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0 for the semester.
Women's soccer led all teams in combined GPA, posting a 3.733 for Spring 2017, marking the third-straight semester the team has led all Musketeer programs in GPA.
On the men's side, baseball posted the highest team mark, recording a 3.378 during a semester in which the Musketeers competed for and won a BIG EAST Championship to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
Of Xavier's 18 teams, 17 posted a GPA of 3.0 or higher. The success of Xavier's teams in the class room is mirrored in XU's success in the NCAA's Academic Progress rating, where five Musketeer teams earned public recognition for posting multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all NCAA programs in that sport in the most recent ratings for 2015-16. In those ratings, 15 of Xavier's teams earned perfect 1,000 single-season APR scores.
In addition to athletic and academic commitments, Xavier student-athletes performed 3,500 hours of service to the community over the past year. The work of the Musketeers impacted 32 organizations, including multiple team efforts for Team Impact, Down Syndrome Association, Academy of World Languages and Adopt-A-Family.
