INDIANAPOLIS - Eight Xavier University athletics teams earned public recognition from the NCAA for posting Academic Progress Rates (APR) in the top-10 percent of their sport for the multiyear rate, ending with the 2017-18 academic year.
Â
"Xavier has always placed an emphasis on excellence in the classroom as well as on the playing field, and the latest APR shows that dedication," said Greg Christopher, Xavier University's Vice President for Administration and Director of Athletics. "The public recognition of these teams is a credit to the efforts of our student-athletes, Â who continue to be committed to being leaders both on the field of play and in the classroom, as well as our coaches and academic staff."Â
Xavier's baseball, men's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's soccer, women's swimming and women's tennis programs all earned the recognition after posting a perfect 1,000 APR. This year's award includes data from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
Â
This marks the 14th consecutive year in which women's tennis has earned a perfect score, making it one of 73 teams nationwide that have earned Public Recognition Awards every year the measure has existed.
Â
Since the NCAA started the Public Recognition Awards program in 2004-05, Xavier has had 90 teams earn the annual award.
Â
Teams earning Public Recognition Awards increased to more than 1,300, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Of the teams recognized, 471 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 857 competed in women's sports. APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 987 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,214 marking an increase of 26 teams from last year.

APR PUBLIC RECOGNITIONÂ Â
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multi-year NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.
Â
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
