Xavier women open meet with a win in 200 medley relay; Men close evening by claiming 800 free relay title

GENEVA, Ohio – Xavier men's and women's swimming each celebrated a BIG EAST title after claiming a relay win during night one of the 2021 BIG EAST Championships at the SPIRE Institute.

Xavier's women tied Villanova in the 200 medley relay to help the Musketeers stand in second place after two events, while Xavier's men took the title in the 800 free relay, setting the Musketeers in third place after three events, including a diving event in which the Musketeers did not compete.

The Championship continues tomorrow with prelims set to begin at 10 a.m.

WOMEN'S NOTABLE

Brooke Atkins, Lydia Schaeffer, Lorelei Gaertner and Kali Fischer led off the meet with a BIG EAST title, tying Villanova with a time of 1:41.74. It's the second BIG EAST Championship in the event for the Musketeers, with Xavier also winning in 2019.
Kali Fischer, Clara Keiser, Emma Swabb and Emma Kauffeld set a time of 7:24.56 in the 800 free relay to finish third.
Xavier stands in second place behind Villanova after two races.

MEN'S NOTABLE

Alex Sironen, Davis Klein, Roark Lundal and Christian Thomas set a time of 1:29.44 in the 200 medley relay to finish second.
Ben Quon, Jon Bernard, Ethan Wing and Andrew Martin posted a time of 6:39.64 in the 800 free relay, touching the wall in second place but claiming the conference title after Seton Hall was disqualified. It's the fourth conference title in the event for Xavier, and third since joining the BIG EAST, winning it in both 2014 and 2015.
Xavier stands in third place behind Villanova and Providence after the two relays, as well as the men's 3-meter diving competition, in which Xavier did not compete.
