Xavier Athletics announced the promotion of Lindsey Niergarth to the Robb and Martha Schueler Head Coach for the Xavier Men’s and Women’s Swimming program in August 2024. Niergarth has been a part of the Xavier Swimming program since Fall 2021, when she joined program as an assistant coach.
“Lindsey brings together the credibility as a former high-level student-athlete herself, with coaching experiences at several levels in the sport,” said Greg Christopher, Xavier University’s Vice President for Institutional Strategy and Director of Athletics. “She has been a big part of our success since joining us as an assistant in 2021. Her vision and passion for the Xavier program made her the clear choice to take over as our new head coach.”
In her three seasons as part of the coaching staff, Niergarth has coached Xavier student-athletes to 28 event championships at the BIG EAST Swimming and Diving Championships. Niergarth has also helped maintain the program’s strong academic reputation, with both programs earning CSCAA Scholar All-America Team honors in each of the past three seasons, with eight student-athletes honored as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans during her tenure at Xavier.
"I am so grateful and beyond happy for the opportunity to continue working with Xavier Swimming,” said Niergarth. “I am thrilled to continue to lead this program in its tradition of academic and athletic success. I am also excited to lead Xavier forward and be able to reach new heights."
In 2024, Niergarth helped lead the Musketeers to a combined 15 event titles and 14 new school records at the 2024 BIG EAST Championships, with 19 Musketeers earning All-BIG EAST honors at the meet.
Xavier's men collected 10 gold medals at the 2024 championship, including going 5-for-5 on first place finishes in relays, on the way to a second place in the team standings. On the women's side, the Musketeers collected a program-best five gold medals and set new program records in nine events, placing fourth in the team standings.
During the course of the 2024 championship meet, Xavier swimmers set NCAA B-Cuts in six events and following the season, three Musketeers earned CSCAA Scholar All-American honors.
At the 2023 BIG EAST Championships, Xavier had 17 student-athletes earn All-BIG EAST honors. On the men's side, 10 Musketeers were named all-conference after Xavier collected seven event wins on the way to a second-place finish, including BIG EAST Most Outstanding Swimmer Andrew Martin. On the women's side, seven Musketeers earned All-BIG EAST after helping Xavier to a fourth-place finish.
In her first season at Xavier, the Musketeer men finished second at the 2022 BIG EAST Championship, collecting six event championships and eight new school records, while the Xavier women finished third, setting four new school records at the meet. Following the conference meet, 19 Musketeers earned All-BIG EAST honors.
Prior to her time at Xavier, Niergarth was the head age group coach for the Cincinnati Marlins, where she helped overhaul the team structure and assisted in the design, implementation and coaching of a new track for elite swimmers. She also created clinics for athletes of various age levels and abilities.
Niergarth also has experience coaching at Peddie Aquatics Association and Peddie School in Hightstown, N.J., Columbia Athletic Club-Silver Lakes in Everett, Wash., City of Charleston Southern Marlins Racing Team in Charleston, S.C., and Hunting Creek Swim and Racquet Club in Columbia, S.C.
Niergarth earned a Bachelors of Arts in Psychology from the University of South Carolina in 2012, where she was a member of the swim program, competing in the SEC. She also earned a Masters of Arts in Sport and Exercise Psychology from Argosy University in 2014.
She has earned the classification as a Level III Coach from the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) Conference and earned lifeguard certification from the American Red Cross and USA Swimming Lifeguard. With USA Swimming, Niergarth has taken part in the Women’s Leadership Summit, Foundations of Coaching 1 and 2, and Athlete Protection programs.
Niergarth and her husband, Jim, have two children Isla (6) and Finn (4) as well as two bulldogs, Sergeant Pepper and Eleanor Rigby
