Renee Horton joined Nate Lie's women's soccer staff in August 2018 as an assistant coach, and helped the Musketeers to a pair of record-breaking seasons in her first two years with the program, capped off with a win over Virginia Tech in the 2019 NCAA Tournament, the program's first NCAA win.
The Musketeers finished the 2019 season with a school-record 17 wins after winning both the BIG EAST regular season championship and tournament championship. Following the season, Xavier's staff was named BIG EAST Staff of the Year.
In addition to the school-record win mark, the 2019 Musketeers also set a school record for most shutouts at 12, and recorded the second most goals scored in a season (43), assists in a season (42), points in a season (128), and the second lowest goals against average (0.17), with each of those marks being the best for the program in the last two decades.
In 2018, Xavier posted a 10-8-3 record, the first 10-win season for the program since 2003. The Musketeers finished a then program-best fourth in the BIG EAST standings, hosting a BIG EAST Championship match and advanced to the semifinals for first time since joining the BIG EAST in 2013. It also marked the first time the Musketeers advanced in the postseason since 2003.
Horton came to Xavier from Lander University in Greenville, S.C. where she had served as an assistant coach since 2016. Horton came to Xavier with over 15 years of college and club soccer coaching experience. Prior to Lander, Horton served as an assistant Director of Coaching for the Cincinnati United and was a staff coach for CUP.
Prior to Cincinnati United, Horton spent 14 years serving as a staff coach for Florida ODP, including as a lead staff coach for six years. Horton also served on the Region III ODP staff. Horton holds a USSF "C" License and also has her USSF National Youth License.
As a defender at the University of South Florida, Horton started 42 of the 63 matches she appeared in, helping the Bulls to a 37-27-6 record during her career. Following her time at USF, Horton played three seasons in the W-League.
Horton earned a bachelor's in communication from South Florida in 2000.
