Charles Barrett, honored in 1958 as a Silver Anniversary All-American (Sports Illustrated), earned the respect of teammates and opponents alike during his illustrious Xavier career. Barrett, who was selected to many All-Opponent teams in his senior year in 1933, was a steady performer on the offensive line. The all-star center helped open many a hole for another Xavier Hall of Famer, quarterback Leo Sack.
"He was just one of those guys you put in there and never had to worry about," Sack remembered. "He was a very steady football player, who helped spring me open many times."
When Barrett wasn't playing center, he went the other way and either played on the defensive line, over the other team's center, or as a linebacker. But it was his play at center that he is best known for, as he made the Loyola All-Opponent team, even though XU lost 7-0 to Loyola of the South.
Barrett, a steady 60-minute performer, went on to help his team to a 5-4 record in 1933, including big victories over Indiana (6-0) and the Haskell Indians (24-13) on Thanksgiving Day.
Well after his graduation, Barrett was selected for the 1958 Silver Anniversary All-America Award by Sports Illustrated on the basis of his football ability and his post-graduate achievements.
Dr. Charles Barrett was Chairman of Western Southern Life Insurance Company.
