Paul "Chip" Cain lettered three years in football, three years in basketball and three years in baseball, earning a spot in the XU Basketball Hall of Fame and football's Legion of Honor.
Cain came to Xavier (then St. Xavier College) from St. Xavier High School with the reputation of being the best high school football center in Ohio. He played his year of freshman ball at that position and his first year of varsity play, as backup to Hub Rapp.
After two games of the 1927 season, however, Coach Joe Meyer was in dire need of another quarterback, and so he shifted the versatile Cain to that position. Cain not only proved he could play the position, but also, when fellow Hall of Famer Tom Clines was injured, played the position regularly for several games. He showed the leadership of a veteran, also showing off his speed and moves returning punts.
At the 1928 football banquet it was announced that Cain was to be the next year's football captain. At his class's 50th reunion, he was appointed to the Legion of Honor, the highest honor for a Xavier football player.
