- Induction:
- 1982
For 40 years, Ray Baldwin was a fixture around the Xavier Athletic Department. He still supported XU Athletics by attending various sporting events after he retired as an XU employee. He was still a walking history book and story teller of Xavier sports knowledge.
Baldwin served as the Musketeer trainer and equipment manager from 1946 until he turned over the duties to Terry Kofler in 1976. Kofler, who worked as a student under Baldwin, was the trainer for the NBA's New Orleans Hornets from 1988-2010.
Ray "Doc" Baldwin took over the golf coaching duties in 1947. His golf highlights include the 1952 Ohio Collegiate Golf Championship. His final team finished third at the 1986 Midwestern Collegiate Conference Championship.
Baldwin came to Xavier at the conclusion of World War II, when at the time, he was working for the Cincinnati Gas & Electric Company. He started the Xavier training program from scratch with a couple of tables and a few rolls of tape.
Over the years, he worked with the Cincinnati Royals, the Cincinnati Reds (in Florida), and many semi-pro football teams. His first love, though, was Xavier Athletics.
Until 2007, the Ray Baldwin Classic golf tournament was held to benefit the Xavier men's golf program.
