The list of Sato?s six languages includes English and French as well as four languages native to Africa: Gkadiri, Sango, Swahili and Yakoma.
Sato?s talents translate well to the basketball court. ?I wouldn?t trade Romain for any player in the country at his position,? said Xavier head coach Thad Matta, who usually prefers to converse with Sato in English.
Sato, a 2002-03 First Team All-Atlantic 10 Conference selection, has earned consensus 2003-04 preseason All-American honors. Athlon Sports named him as a First Team selection, while he earned Second Team honors from Street & Smith?s, Blue Ribbon College Basketball and Basketball News magazines. He is also on the preseason list of Wooden Award All-American candidates.
Sato, Xavier?s leading returning scorer (18.1 ppg.) and rebounder (7.1 rpg.), will be in Philadelphia on Thursday for the annual Atlantic 10 Conference Men?s Basketball Media Day.
Sato and his Xavier teammates play their final exhibition game on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cintas Center against the Upstate All-Stars.
