
David West Receives NABC/Pete Newell Award

This marked the third straight day that West has received a national honor here in New Orleans, a streak that will reach four straight days on Monday. On Friday West received the Rupp Trophy as the 2003 Associated Press National Player of the Year. On Saturday West was announced as the 2003 winner of the Senior CLASS Award, which honors the top senior player in the nation. On Monday West will receive the 2003 Oscar Robertson Player of the Year Trophy, which honors the U.S. Basketball Writers Association?s National Player of the Year.
West, who is also the 2003 Basketball Times National Player of the Year, was the first player in Atlantic 10 history to be named Player of the Year three times. He averaged 20.4 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.6 blocks per game as a senior in leading Xavier to a 26-6 overall record and the regular season conference championship. West, who earned his college degree in December, became the only player in Atlantic 10 history to record 2,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.
Next weekend West will be one of five finalists in Los Angeles for the announcement of the 2003 Wooden Award winner.
