CINCINNATI - Senior forward Brian Thornton poured in a career-high 27 points to lead the XU scoring attack as the Musketeers downed Troy, 78-54, on Thursday evening in front of 9,367 at Cintas Center. With the win, XU improves to 6-2 on the season while Troy slips to 4-5.
Thornton's 27 came on 11-of-13 shooting. The Louisville, Ky. native also pulled down seven rebounds on the night.
Junior forward Justin Doellman recorded his fourth career double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Doellman also dished-out five assists.
Sophomore guard Stanley Burrell put in another solid performance with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Five of Burrell's seven boards came on the offensive glass.
Sophomore forward Josh Duncan was the fourth Musketeer in double-figures with 10 points.
Troy trailed by seven points, 36-29, after Sammy Sharp connected on a 3-pointer at the four-minute mark but the Musketeers charged out to a decisive 13-2 run and went into the half with a commanding 49-31 lead.
XU took its largest lead of the game, 78-52, when Will Caudle connected on a jump hook with 2:30 to go and the Musketeers cruised to victory.
Bobby Dixon led the way for Troy with 18 points and connected on a game-high four 3-point field goals.
The Musketeers held a commanding 49-to-23 rebounding lead including a 21-to-7 advantage on the offensive glass. XU shot 46 percent from the field on Thursday including a sizzling 56.7 percent clip in the first half.
XU will be back in action when the team welcomes Southern to Cincinnati. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. at Cintas Center.
