LOVELAND, Ohio - Senior Jason Kokrak fired a 10-under par 134 on Monday and is tied for the lead heading into the final round of the 2006 Xavier Invitational at Oasis Golf Club. The Musketeers are in third place overall and will play in the final pairing Tuesday morning along with tournament-leading Maryland and second-place Austin Peay. Senior John Streibich is tied for third overall after rounds of 66 and 70. Tuesday's final round begins at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Kokrak opened play Monday with a 65, matching his career-low round set earlier this season at the Air Force Invitational. For Kokrak, it was a 65 that could have been lower. On the 525-yard par-5 ninth hole, he hit his second shot from about 125 yards into the hole on the fly, but the ball had enough backspin to pop it out of the cup. He tapped in his eagle putt (for a 31 on the front) - one of 10 eagles on the day at the ninth.
He followed the first round with a 69 in round two for a 36-hole total of 134 (-10). He sits tied atop the leader board with Tyler Whitman of Maryland, who carded a pair of 67s Monday on the par-72, 6,921-yard Oasis course.
Streibich opened play with a 66 to match his career-low round set last season in the final round of the Atlantic 10 Championship. He posted a two-under 70 in round two and is tied with Eastern Michigan's Bryan Haas (66-70) at 136, two strokes back of the leaders.
Also for Xavier, freshman Alan Glynn sits tied for 21st with a 141 (70-71). Junior Andy Connell is tied for 67th at 149 (75-74) and junior Brian Keating is tied for 74th at 150 (76-74).
The Musketeers also sent four out playing as individuals. Sophomore Josh Hedge (74-70=144) and freshman Bryan Alred (75-69=144) are both tied for 46th. Sophomore Kyle Hodges (76-71=147) is tied for 58th, while freshman Kieran Lovelock is tied for 78th (79-72=151). Hedge's 70 set a new career-mark, while Alred and Lovelock saw their first collegiate action.
In perfect scoring conditions with blue skies, temperatures in the 80's and no winds, four Xavier Invitational team records fell on day one. Austin Peay posted a 274 score in round one, setting a new opening round team record. Maryland's second-round 271 was both an overall 18-hole team record and the best-ever second round score in tournament history. In addition, Maryland's 36-hole score of 553 set a new tourney standard. For the day, the course yielded 28 eagles and 726 birdies to the 96 golfers on the course.
On the tightly packed leaderboard, just 15 strokes separate first-place Maryland (553) from sixth-place New Orleans (566) in the 18-team field. Austin Peay (556), Xavier (560), Wichita State (563) and Eastern Kentucky (564) round out the top six.
