KINGSTON, R.I. - On the heels of a golden goal in overtime, the Xavier University women's soccer team lost to the University of Rhode Island, 1-0, at the URI Soccer Complex Friday night. The Rams' game-winner came in the 95th minute, snapping a two-game winning streak for the Musketeers.
After 94:13 of scoreless soccer, URI's Amy Cochran struck for her fifth goal of the season when she headed a ball past XU freshman goalkeeper Kelly Farrell from six yards out. Thorunn Jonsdottir got an assist on the game-winner as she found Cochran in the box with a crossing pass.
The loss ended an otherwise sparkling night for Farrell, who made 10 saves against the first-place Rams (7-6-0, 3-0-0 A-10). URI keeper Amanda Thomas made five saves in the shutout effort.
Senior Angie Scarlato paced the Musketeers (5-7-0, 0-2-0 A-10) with three shots. Sophomore Carissa Gilbert came off the bench and collected two shots. Jonsdottir's six shots were a game-high for URI.
Xavier returns to action Sunday with a Noon ET match at the University of Massachusetts.
