Women's Basketball Falls in Paradise Jam Championship

ST. THOMAS, V.I. - Senior guard Miranda Green led the Musketeers with 15 points but Xavier shot just 30.8 percent from the field and fell to Marquette by a 73-53 count on Saturday evening in the Championship Game of the 2006 Paradise Jam in St. Thomas, V.I. With the loss, XU falls from the ranks of the unbeaten and slips to 5-1 on the season. Marquette improves to 5-1.
Green's 15 came on 5-of-12 shooting including 4-of-6 from long range. Green's performance earned her a spot on the All-Tournament Team along with teammate Amber Harris. Harris scored 12 points, snatched eight rebounds and swatted three shots.
Senior guard Michele Miller was the final Musketeer in double-figures with 11 points. Classmate DeAnna Mason snared seven rebounds and dished-out a career-high four assists.
XU trailed by eight points, 39-31, at the half and whittled the Marquette lead to five points, 43-38, after Michele Miller converted on an old-fashioned 3-point play at the 17-minute mark.
MU would seize control of the game with a decisive 27-13 run, extending its lead to 70-51 at the 3:30 mark.
The Musketeers were out-rebounded 52-to-36 including 36-to-24 on the defensive glass. XU shot just 25.7 percent (9-of-35) in the second half and went only 5-of-24 from deep in the contest.
The first half was back-and-forth in the early stages as the contest featured five ties and six lead changes in the first 8:30. However, Marquette took control of the game with a 9-0 run and seized its largest lead of the game, 24-15, after Christiana Quaye converted on a fast break lay-up at the 7:50 mark.
XU would not go away though and answered the MU run with a 6-0 spurt, which culminated with a Green driving lay-up, pulling the Musketeers within three points with five-minutes remaining.
Marquette ended the first stanza on an 8-3 mini-run over the final two-minutes and headed into the locker room up 39-31.
XU is back in action when the team takes on No. 24 Louisville on Thursday, November 30. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Cintas Center.
