ROCK HILL, S.C. - Xavier University could not withstand a barrage of Winthrop hits in the final game of the series and fell to the home team 15-3 on Sunday afternoon at The Winthrop Ballpark. The Eagles stormed out of the gates and plated eight of their 15 runs in the first four innings before the Musketeers could light up the scoreboard. With the loss, XU is now 2-5 on the season, while No. 26 Winthrop improves to 10-2 overall.
After recording two quick outs to start the bottom half of the first, Xavier pitching would then allow three walks and two hits along with two wild pitches to spark the first Winthrop rally. When the dust settled, XU found itself in a 3-0 hole and was not be able to recover.
The Musketeers' big inning came in the fifth as freshman Adam Pasono roped a shot to centerfield to record his first collegiate hit to start the inning. After a Jordan Wolf walk, senior Sean Brewer roped Xavier's only extra base hit of the contest, in the form of a double, to score Pasono and Wolf. Brewer would later score in the inning after a single off the bat of Dan Hayden drove in the final run for XU.
Brewer finished the afternoon 2-for-4 and was the only Musketeer to record multiple hits. The senior also extended his hitting streak to seven straight games. Junior Drew Roberts ended his hitting streak in the game and finished 0-for-4. Along with Pasono, freshman Jack Bonnikson also recorded his first collegiate hit in the contest. Bonnikson roped a single to center in the top of the ninth. Junior Matt Waskerwitz and sophomore Tyler Aholt were the only other Musketeers to register a hit in the game.
Xavier will take tomorrow off and travel to Winston Salem, N.C. for their upcoming game on Tuesday afternoon against Wake Forest. The Musketeers and Demon Deacons will square off at 2:30 pm at Gene Hooks Stadium. XU will then continue its spring break trip in the Carolinas with Davidson on Wednesday and then finish up with a three-game series against Gardner-Webb next weekend before returning north.
