LEXINGTON, Ky. - Xavier University could not withstand a Kentucky team that sent 18 batters to the plate in the first two innings and proceeded to score all 13 of its runs over the first four innings as the Musketeers fell 13-3 in non-conference action at Cliff Hagan Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Xavier falls to 6-14 on the season, while No. 26 Kentucky improves to 18-4 overall.
The Wildcats pounded out 10 of their 12 hits in the first four innings and were aided by seven walks and three hit batters by the XU pitching staff and three Xavier fielding errors en route to Kentucky posting all 13 of its runs, which only two were earned, over those first four frames. The Musketeers managed a late comeback in the ninth with three of their eight hits coming in the last inning but it was too little and too late. In the game, all eight of the Xavier hits were singles as the Wildcat pitching kept the Musketeers off balance all afternoon.
Matt Waskerwitz continued to stay hot at the plate as the junior collected three of XU's eight hits in the contest and finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with three singles and two runs scored. Freshman Neil Lindgren ended the day 1-for-1 with two walks and Jordan Wolf, Collin Salzenstein and Steve Brown were each 1-for-2 at the plate. Junior Dan Hayden collected the final hit for XU and finished 1-for-3 at the dish.
Bill Konecny picked up the loss on the mound for XU as the junior pitched 1.2 innings allowing only one earned run on four hits but walked four. Freshman Chad Buchignani allowed only two hits while striking out three in his two innings of relief.
The Musketeers will have tomorrow off before getting ready to host the opening weekend of Atlantic 10 action at Hayden Field on Friday afternoon. XU will welcome the University of Rhode Island to campus as the Rams and Musketeers will face off in a three-game series this weekend.
