OXFORD, Ohio - A bases clearing triple in the bottom of the sixth by Adam Lipski capped a five-run inning and propelled Xavier past Miami, 5-3, in non-conference action at McKie Field at Hayden Park on Tuesday afternoon. XU spoiled the RedHawk home opener for the second straight season. With the win, the Musketeers improve to 8-16 overall, while Miami falls to 8-11 on the season.
After weather changed the venue, Miami got on the board first as the RedHawks posted three runs in the top of the fifth. The Musketeers would respond with a five-run sixth inning, which was capped by a bases-clearing triple off the bat of Adam Lipski. Lipski drilled a 1-2 pitch over the first baseman's head and into the right field corner to plate Robbie Kelley, Collin Salzenstein and Neil Lindgren. Lindgren roped a single through the left side to allow pinch runner Steve Brown to score right after Matt Waskerwitz used a sacrifice fly to allow Dan Hayden to cross the plate for the first run of the inning.
Lipski finished the day a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and the three decisive three RBIs. Salzenstein was 2-for-3 at the dish and Jordan Wolf was 2-for-4 with two singles. Hayden, Lindgren and Chris Lozan each tallied a hit on the afternoon.
Junior Bill Konecny picked up his second win of the season after working one inning allowing only one hit. Classmate Mike Creevy picked up his first save of the year as the righty came in to shut the door in the ninth and striking out one.
Xavier will have the rest of the week off before hosting Fordham in Atlantic 10 action this weekend at Hayden Field. The Musketeers and Rams will square off starting on Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm. Junior Mike Creevy will get the start on the mound for XU.
