March 5, 2006
CINCINNATI --- The Xavier Musketeers will play the Massachusetts Minutemen in the first round of the 2006 Atlantic 10 Conference Men's Basketball Championship. Seventh-seeded UMass and 10th-seeded Xavier will tip off at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 8 at U.S. Bank Arena in Downtown Cincinnati. The winner of that game plays second-seeded Charlotte in the quarterfinals on Thursday.
Xavier, 17-10, closed the regular season with a 65-56 loss at UMass on Saturday.
The Musketeers are looking to write more history this week. Xavier became the first team in Atlantic 10 history to win four games in four days at the 2004 A-10 Championship at the University of Dayton Arena. Seeded fourth in the West, the Musketeers beat St. Bonaventure (90-64), top-ranked Saint Joseph's (87-67), George Washington (70-47), and host Dayton (58-49). Only 10 schools in NCAA history have won four games in four days in their conference tournaments.
Xavier has compiled a 15-7 (.682) record in 10 Atlantic 10 Tournament appearances. Xavier has won three Atlantic 10 Tournament Championships since joining the A-10 for the 1995-96 season, including two of the last four titles (2004 and 2002). XU also won the A-10 Tournament Championship in 1998. Xavier head coach Sean Miller was the associate head coach on XU's 2002 and 2004 championship teams.
