CINCINNATI - In the final game of the series, Xavier could not continue its winning ways and fell to visiting Saint Louis. Junior Matt Waskerwitz drove in the only XU run as the blue and white were defeated 6-1 at Hayden Field on Sunday afternoon. The Musketeers are now 11-26 on the season and 3-9 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Billikens improve to 19-15 overall and 8-4 in conference action.
Saint Louis jumped out on top in the top of the second as the Billikens used two XU errors to plate three runs on two hits to take the early 3-0 lead. SLU would not relinquish the advantage for the rest of the contest as they tacked on two more in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the eighth.
The Musketeers would score their only run in the bottom of the second as XU would take advantage of two Saint Louis errors in the frame. After a leadoff single by Andy Zellers, two SLU errors would allow XU to load the bases with one out. Matt Waskerwitz would step to the plate and beat out a double play chance for the Billikens to allow Zellers to score and cut the lead to 3-1 in favor of the visitors.
Freshman Steve Brown was the only Musketeer with a multi-hit game as the Cincinnati native finished with a perfect day at the plate going 2-for-2 with two singles and two walks. Waskerwitz finished 1-for-4 with a single and the lone RBI for XU. Zellers and Neil Lindgren also had a hit on the game with Zellers ending 1-for-3 and Lindgren finishing 1-for-4.
Dan Graham picked up his fourth loss of the season as the junior finished the day allowing five runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out four. Steve Sakosits and Brett Greenwell came out of the pen to provided two innings of relief each to finish out the game. Sakosits allowed one hit and struck out two, while Greenwell allowed one run on two hits with no strikeouts.
Xavier will return to action tomorrow night as the team will travel across town to face Cincinnati. Game time is slated for 6:30 pm at UC Bearcat Stadium. This will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
