DAYTON, Ohio - In a rain shortened contest, Xavier dropped the opening game of the Atlantic 10 series to Dayton by a score of 2-0. The skies opened up in the top of the sixth inning as the Musketeers had a man on first with one out. The loss drops XU to 13-28 on the season and 3-10 in A-10 play, while the Flyers improve to 21-14 overall and 10-3 in conference action.
The deciding runs came in the bottom of the first as UD pounded out two runs on three hits, including a leadoff triple by the Flyers' Michael Massa who was brought home by a sacrifice fly on the very next pitch. After a flyout by the next hitter, a walk to Bryan Chandler and back to back singles by Bobby Getty and William Benoit plated the second and final run of the game leaving the score at 2-0 in favor of the home team.
Xavier would put a runner at third with two outs in the top of the third as freshman Neil Lindgren singled and then moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt but the Musketeers could not find a way to push the run across.
Lindgren led the Musketeers at the plate with a 1-for-2 day including a single and a walk. Classmate Steve Brown was 1-for-3 on the day with XU's first hit of the afternoon. Brown is currently carrying a seven game hitting streak after today's game. Sean Brewer and Matt Waskerwitz each had a knock in the contest as well.
Dan Graham picked up the loss for the Musketeers as the junior went four solid innings allowing only two runs on five hits, while striking out four. Mark Janszen provided an inning of relief and only allowed one hit.
The two teams will square off in game two tomorrow afternoon at Time Warner Cable Stadium. Game time is set for 1:00 pm and will match Xavier's Mike Creevy against Dayton's Luke Trubee.
