CINCINNATI - After taking a 6-2 advantage into the bottom of the seventh, Xavier could not recover from a six-run inning by Cincinnati and fell to the crosstown rival 8-6. The loss evens the season series at 1-1 after XU took the first meeting of the season, 11-10 at UC on April 17. The loss drops the Musketeers to 13-31 on the year, while the Bearcats improve to 25-15 overall.
Sean Brewer delivered Xavier's first hit of the game in the top of the third, which allowed the first runs of the game to score as well. The senior delivered a one-out double into the left-center gap and his team-leading 17th of the season to drive in Dan Hayden and Matt Waskerwitz to give XU the early 2-0 advantage.
Cincinnati would answer with one run in the bottom half of the inning. The Bearcats would capitalize on an XU error and use two hits to plate their only run of the inning and cut the lead to 2-1 in favor of the visitors.
Xavier pushed another run across in the top of the fifth after three walks and a sacrifice fly by Brewer scored Waskerwitz for the second time in the game.
The Musketeers put together their best inning of the game in the top half of the sixth as the blue and white led off the inning with a double by Adam Lipski. After a walk to Jordan Wolf, Robbie Kelley stepped to the plate and delivered the sacrifice bunt but Lipski beat the throw to third and kept the bases loaded with no one out. Junior Dan Hayden was the next batter and the catcher roped a two-RBI single down the right field line and pushed the Musketeer lead to 5-1. UC finally recorded the first out of the inning as Waskerwitz lined out to left but it was deep enough to score Kelly and finish the inning with the score 6-1.
UC would plate one run in the bottom of the sixth and six runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh to storm in front and take the lead for good, 8-6, after seven innings.
XU took advantage of nine walks early in the game but could not capitalize on 10 runners left on base on the evening. Xavier is now 7-6 when leading after six innings and 4-14 when making two or more errors in the game.
Brewer led the Musketeer offense on the evening as the senior finished his final crosstown shootout 2-for-3 with a double, walk, sacrifice fly and three RBIs. Hayden finished the evening 1-for-3 but delivered two RBIs in his only hit of the game. Waskerwitz finished 0-for-1 with two walks, a sacrifice fly and an RBI, while Lipski, Kelley and Steve Brown each had a hit in the contest.
Senior Steve Sakosits threw six solid innings of baseball on the night. The senior allowed only six runs (three earned) on six hits and struck out three in the no decision. Mark Janszen picked up his third loss on the season as the junior allowed two runs on three hits and struck out two in his two innings of work.
The game scheduled for tomorrow afternoon at Hayden Field with Indiana State has been cancelled. The Musketeers will now be off until this weekend's Atlantic 10 series with St. Bonaventure. Xavier will take on the Bonnies starting at 3:00 pm on Friday afternoon. Mike Creevy (3-7, 5.05 ERA) will take the hill for the blue and white to begin the series opener.
