OLEAN, N.Y. - In the final game of the three-game Atlantic 10 series, Xavier dropped the contest to St. Bonaventure by a final of 14-4 in eight innings. The Musketeers drop to 13-34 overall with the loss and now stand at 3-15 in the A-10. The Bonnies improve to 18-15 on the season and are now 12-5 in conference play.
The Musketeers again got on the scoreboard first as XU posted a three-spot in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back-to-back singles to start the inning by Adam Lipski, Dan Hayden and Andy Zellers plated Lipski for the first run of the contest. Sacrifice flies by Jordan Wolf and Matt Waskerwitz would score Hayden and Zellers and end the inning with the blue and white up 3-0.
The Bonnies answered with five runs in the sixth, six runs in the seventh and three more runs in the eighth to erase the early lead by Xavier. SBU put up 14 runs on 16 hits in the contest and took advantage of seven walks by the XU pitching staff.
Zellers finished his day 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored. Hayden finished the afternoon 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, while Wolf and Waskerwitz were each 1-for-3 on the game with and RBI each. Freshman Steve Brown extended his hitting streak to 12 games and finished 1-for-4 at the plate.
Michael Lucas picked up the loss on the day as the sophomore allowed eight runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts in his 6.2 innings of work. Steve Sakosits, Chad Buchignani and Bill Konecny combined to finish the last third of an inning as the trio allowed six more runs on four hits and five walks with only one strikeout.
Xavier will take the week off for finals before getting set for the final home A-10 weekend against visiting Temple. The first game of the three-game set with the Owls will begin at 3:00 pm on Friday afternoon.
