PHILADELPHIA - A pitcher's duel found Xavier on the short end of the scoreboard in the series opener against La Salle. The Explorers took game one of the Atlantic 10 series from the Musketeers by a score of 4-0 on Thursday afternoon at Elmwood Park. The loss drops XU to 14-37 on the season and 4-18 in conference play, while La Salle moves to 17-29 overall and 9-12 in A-10 action.
Xavier threatened in the top of the third as XU loaded the bases with two outs after Jordan Wolf reached on an error and walks by Steve Brown and Neil Lindgren filled the bases. A groundout would end the threat and the Musketeers would not be able to get another runner past second base for the rest of the contest.
Senior Sean Brewer led the way offensively for the Musketeers and finished the afternoon 2-for-4 at the plate as he recorded his team-leading 18th double of the season. Freshman Steve Brown was 1-for-3 on the day and his single in the first inning extended his team-high hitting streak to 16 games. Junior Jordan Wolf recorded the final hit on the day for the blue and white, finishing 1-for-3 in the game.
Junior Mike Creevy got the nod on the hill and threw an impressive game but was not given any run support in his complete game loss. Creevy finished the game allowing four runs (three earned) on 10 hits in his third complete game effort of the season with only one walk and five strikeouts.
Game two will get underway tomorrow afternoon starting at 1:00 pm at Elmwood Park's Latshaw/McCarthy Field. Xavier's Michael Lucas (0-8, 5.00 ERA) will take the mound against La Salle's Dan Waters (3-5, 3.24 ERA).
