CINCINNATI - For the second time in as many days, Xavier could not complete the comeback for the second consecutive game and fell to visiting Temple, 4-2, in 10 innings at Hayden Field on Saturday afternoon. The loss drops the Musketeers to 14-35 on the season and 4-16 in A-10 play, while Temple moves to 10-35 overall and 4-14 in conference action.
The Musketeers lit up the scoreboard first as junior Chris Lozan drove a single down the right field line to plate Adam Pasono and Steve Brown to give XU the early 2-0 lead after six innings. Pasono led off the inning with a single through the left side and Brown was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second with no outs. Pasono and Brown were moved into scoring position on a textbook sacrifice bunt by classmate Neil Lindgren before the Lozan single.
Temple would answer with one run in the top of the eighth and another to tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the ninth. In the extra frame, the Owls used three hits to plate two more runs to take the lead for good at 4-2.
Lozan would end the day 1-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Matt Waskerwitz and Neil Lindgren were the only Musketeers with two hits on the day as they finished 2-for-3 with a walk and 2-for-4, respectively. Brown again extended his team-high 14-game hitting streak with a 1-for-4 effort on the afternoon.
Sophomore Michael Lucas picked up the no decision after throwing a gem. Lucas went eight innings and allowed two runs on four hits, while striking out six. He faced 30 batters on the afternoon.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game set tomorrow at 12:00 pm and look to decide the series at Hayden Field. Senior Steve Sakosits (0-1, 4.56 ERA) will make the start as the blue and white will honor the seniors in their final game at Hayden Field tomorrow before the game.
