Women's Soccer Team Loses Regular Season Opener At Loyola

The Xavier University women's soccer team lost its regular season opener 2-1 on Friday night at Loyola Chicago. A pair of set pieces, a corner kick and a free kick, proved to be Xavier's undoing as XU fell on the road.
Xavier scored first in this one in the 25th minute. Junior Karin Martini played a long ball from just past midfield to senior Angie Scarlato. Scarlato chipped it in from about 10 yards at 24:20 out to give XU what proved to be its only lead and only goal of the match.
Loyola tied the score at 1-1 at the 36:44 mark as Amy Lomas scored on a scramble in front of the net off a corner kick. The two teams went into halftime deadlocked at 1-1.
The Ramblers scored what proved to be the game-winner at 69:16 off a free kick by Cynthi Morote-Ariza from just outside the box.
The loss drops Xavier to 0-1, while Loyola goes to 1-0.
XU plays at Ohio State on Sunday night at 6:00 p.m.
