LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Xavier University women's soccer team saw its two-game winning streak come to an end with a 5-0 shutout loss at Louisville on Sunday. The Musketeers fell to 2-4 with the loss, while the Cardinals raised their record to 4-0-1. Louisville's win avenged Xavier's 3-1 win over the Cardinals at XU last season.
Louisville scored its first goal 13:50 into the first half as Shannon Smyth found the back of the net off an assist on a cross from Monique Gjini. Jen Avila added a second goal at 31:19, which gave the Cardinals their 2-0 lead that they took into the locker room at halftime. Despite the 2-0 deficit, XU had matched UL 5-5 in first half shots.
Xavier held a 7-6 advantage in shots with less than 20 minutes left in the match but still trailed 2-0. Louisville added three goals in the final 13:28 to stretch the final deficit to 5-0, including a pair of goals from Lindsey Fox.
Louisville ended the game with a 14-9 advantage in shots.
Xavier hosts Morehead State on Friday at 5 p.m.
