The Xavier University Musketeers defeated the University of Cincinnati Bearcats 1-0 in overtime in the annual crosstown shootout for women's soccer on Sunday at Xavier on a game-winning penalty kick by Angie Scarlato. The senior from Cincinnati's Mother of Mercy High School nailed the game-winner just 2:50 into the first overtime period.
Xavier, 1-3-0, won for the second straight year over its crosstown rivals and for the second straight year XU won in overtime. The only other time that XU has won back-to-back games in the series was in the 1990 and 1991 seasons. Cincinnati, 2-1-1, suffered its first loss of the season.
The evenly contested match looked the same way on paper as XU finished the night with a 22-20 advantage in shots, including 14-11 in shots on goal. Both teams had numerous chances tonight to win the match in regulation but were turned away by the opposing defense.
Xavier and Cincinnati battled to a scoreless tie in the first half. Cincinnati outshot Xavier 9-8, although XU held a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal.
It was more of the same in a back-and-forth second half as both teams created multiple opportunities but were denied by some big defensive stops. The stats continued to back up the balance of the match's competitiveness. The two teams each had 11 shots in the second half with UC holding an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal.
XU freshman goalkeeper Kelly Farrell had 11 saves in recording her first career shutout while UC freshman goalkeeper Andrea Kaminski had 13 saves in the loss.
Xavier returns to the Xavier Soccer Complex for its next match on Friday, September 8 against Ohio University at 7 p.m.
