Volleyball Takes Temple to Five Games, Wins 3-2

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - It took five games but the Xavier volleyball team was able to defeat the Temple Owls, 3-2, in Philadelphia Saturday afternoon at McGonigle Hall. Sophomore Kelly Ruth smashed out a new career-high 21 kills in the match to go along with 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season. The Musketeers improved to 16-6 overall and a perfect 6-0 in Atlantic 10 play while the Owls fell to 5-15 for the season and 1-3 in Conference action.
Also for Xavier, senior Jill Quayle had 18 kills and eight total blocks in the match while senior Jenni Horvath smashed out 10 kills to go with 10 digs for her third double-double of the year. Sophomore Hillary Otte tallied 19 kills on the night while sophomore Lauren Kaminsky had a team-high tying 14 digs. Junior Jenn Welsh got under a season-high 14 digs in the contest.
There were 33 ties and 11 lead changes in the five-game match and the Owls took a two-game lead to start the match, winning game one 30-22 and game two 30-23. The Musketeers came charging back to take games three and four, 30-25 and 30-26. XU used almost a 70% hitting percentage to put Temple away, 15-6, in game five.
For the Owls, Yun Yi Zhang smashed out a match-high 33 kills and Sun Ying Ying had a match-high 19 digs.
The Musketeers return home next weekend to host back-to-back A-10 matches Oct. 12 and Oct. 13. On Friday, XU will host Charlotte and on Saturday the Muskeeters will welcome George Washington. Please continue to check www.GOXAVIER.com for the latest updates and stats.
