DAYTON, Ohio - In front a record crowd of over 1800 cheering fans in the University of Dayton's Frerick's Center the Xavier volleyball team fell, 3-0, to the No. 16 UD Flyers Thursday evening. The Musketeers were led by sophomore Kelly Ruth with 14 kills and sophomore Lauren Kaminsky with 13 digs. Xavier moves to 21-8 overall and 10-2 in Atlantic 10 play while the Flyers improve to 27-1 overall and 11-1 in conference action.
The first game started off with a service error by the Flyers and the Musketeers gained a two-point advantage, 5-3, off back-to-back kills. UD tied the frame at five apiece and would take a two-point lead of its own at 10-8. Dayton increased its lead to four, 15-11, and Xavier decided to take a minute to talk it over. Out of the break XU used a 4-1 run off the serving of freshman Claire Paszkiewicz to tie the frame at 16-all but UD scored the next two to retake the lead.
After trading several points, a kill by sophomore Hillary Otte knotted the game at 22-22. Otte brought the score even, 25-25, by smashing a kill. The Flyers would go up by two but the advantage was erased. Xavier retook the lead, 28-27, when a Flyer hit the ball out of bounds and it was UD's turn to take a timeout. Dayton scored the next point and XU called for a break. The first game would go beyond the normal 30 points as a team must win by two with Dayton finally reaching that margin of victory, 33-31.
Xavier scored the first point of game two before giving up seven straight to Dayton as the Flyers took a 7-1 lead into an XU timeout. UD would get three more before a kill by senior Jenni Horvath earned XU sideout to set the score at 10-3 in favor of the Flyers. The Musketeers used their second timeout but the Flyers then used a 4-1 run to expand their lead to 10, 15-5. After a kill by Quayle, UD broke open the game scoring seven consecutive points to hold a 15 point advantage.
The Musketeers retaliated with four unanswered points to cut the lead to 11, 22-11, causing Dayton to use its first timeout of the frame. Although XU notched the next point, UD got the serve back and rattled off five straight. The Musketeers used a 5-0 run of their own to send Dayton into a timeout and then scored another point out of the break. It would not be enough as the Flyers took game two, 30-18.
Dayton headed into the third frame with a two game advantage and scored the first point of the game. An assisted block by Quayle and Horvath put the Musketeers up one, 3-2, and after two consecutive kills XU was up three, 7-4. The Flyers were able to tie the game at 12 apiece and then took the lead, 13-12, after a kill by Jamie-Lee Richards. UD went up by three, 18-15, and XU called a timeout.
The Flyers went up by four, 24-20, before a kill from Ruth gave the Musketeers sideout but were unable to keep it alive. Two straight Dayton points lead to a Xavier timeout and Paszkiewicz recorded a kill to pull XU to within four. It would not be enough. Dayton tallied three straight to take the game, 30-23, and the match, 3-0.
Dayton was led by Richards with 23 kills and Adrienne Green with 17 digs.
