BUFFALO, N.Y. - Led by Patrick McGrath and Mary Catherine Mahon, the Xavier men's and women's swimming teams enjoyed a solid day of preliminary competition on Thursday morning at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships in Buffalo, N.Y. McGrath posted the day's fastest time in the 500 free, while Mahon is the fourth-seed heading into tonight's 500 free final.
McGrath paced the field in XU's second-best career time (4:36.37) and is in the fast lane for tonight's 500 free championship final. The sophomore will look to be the second-consecutive Musketeer to win the A-10 title in the 500 as junior Nico Lilly accomplished the feat last season. Lilly's time last year of 4:35.06 is the current XU record.
Shane Jenkins' time of 4:40.57 was good to make tonight's consolation final. Lilly will also swim with Jenkins in the consolation, after clocking a 4:43.95 in the prelims.
Mahon put a time of 5:08.43 on the board in the 500 free - the third-quickest in school history - to ensure herself a spot in tonight's championship final.
Senior Dave Janszen was clocked in the 200 IM in 1:51.67, which equaled his own school record set in 2005. Today's mark was second overall to the 1:51.27 posted by George Washington's David Zenk. Neil Reierson (1:56.13) and Jake Burke (1:57.54) will swim the consolation final of the 200 IM.
Krystel Kooyman will also swim in the championship final of the 200 IM on the women's side. Her time of 2:09.60 was good for the seventh-seed tonight. Amber Thompson (2:10.73) missed the championship final cut by just 14-tenths of a second.
Elaina Suba made the consolation final in the 50 free with her time of 24.70. Alissa Schriner missed the consolation cut by a one-hundredth of a second.
The men's 50 free will see Matt Krouse (21.49) swim in the consolation final.
Tonight's action begins at 6:30 p.m. from the Flickinger Athletic Center on the campus of Erie Community College. The finals of both the men's and women's 200 free relays will also be contested tonight.
