BUFFALO, N.Y. - Xavier will send 22 swimmers to this evening's finals, 11 of which will compete in the championship heat, as the Musketeers enjoyed a successful morning at the 2007 Atlantic 10 Championship in Buffalo, N.Y. Both Matt Marcus and Shane Jenkins set XU records, while Martha Cutter-Wilson qualified for tonight's finals in two events.
The Musketeers are looking to make a move tonight with the men entering the Day Three finals in sixth (132 points) and the women in seventh (117). The XU men are just 37 points shy of third place, while the women are 28 points out of fourth.
Marcus is the top see heading into the 100 breast finals, smashing the old XU record with his 57.33 time. He is the top seed in tonight's event by 11-tenth of a second. Joe Conklin (58.95), Mark Febus (59.64) and Brian Stromberg (1:00.13) will swim in the consolation final.
Jenkins also set a new Xavier record with his mark of 50.57 in the 100 fly. He'll be the fifth-seed for tonight's final and swim right next to teammate Neil Reierson (51.02) in the championship heat.
Also for the men, Dave Janszen will look to medal for the third time as he is the second-seed for the 400 IM. He swam the event in 4:03.44 this morning. The fifth-year senior has already captured bronze medals in the 200 medley relay and the 200 IM. Jake Burke (4:12.17) and Sam Cutter-Wilson (4:12.55) are swimming in the 400 IM's consolation final.
Matt Krouse (consolation finals of the 100 back) and Patrick McGrath (consolation of the 200 free) round out the men's entries for tonight.
The women find themselves in prime position to score points with championship final qualifiers in four different events. Their best chance comes in the 100 back, which will see three Musketeers in the final heat. Mary Catherine Mahon is seeded fourth after her prelim time of 58.57. Elaina Suba (58.63) is sixth and Mary Kuhnen (59.42) is eighth. Lindsay Jackson (1:01.51) qualified 16th and will swim in the consolation heat.
Cutter-Wilson and Kelsey Burns find themselves in the championship finals of the 400 IM, after posting times of 4:36.25 (fifth-seed) and 4:39.02 (eighth-seed), respectively. Bridget Benner's time of 4:43.73 was good to sneak into tonight's consolation.
Alissa Schriner swam the 100 fly in a time of 59.00, good for the seventh-fastest this morning and a spot in the championship finals. The consolation final will see Amber Thompson (59.60) and Jill Winhusen (59.66).
The XU women's entries tonight are rounded out with Krystel Kooyman as a finalist in the 100 breast (1:07.05) and Cutter-Wilson (1:07.25) in the consolation.
