OXFORD, Ohio - A 3-for-4 afternoon by senior Matt Waskerwitz would not be enough to help Xavier past host Miami on Wednesday afternoon at McKie Field at Hayden Park. The Musketeers dropped the non-conference contest by a final of 9-4. The loss puts XU at 4-18 on the season, while the RedHawks improve to 8-9 overall.
The RedHawks opened the game by posting two runs on two hits in each of the first two innings to take a 4-1 advantage. Xavier notched one in the top of the second after Drew Roberts belted a solo homerun, his second of the season.
Miami would score a run in seven of its eight innings and hold Xavier scoreless in five of its nine innings. The Musketeers would have their biggest inning in the top of the fourth as Adam Lipski led off the inning with a single. Jordan Wolf drew a walk to put runners at first and second with no outs. After a fly out by Roberts, sophomore Neil Lindgren hit a sharp liner to shortstop that Jordan Petraitis could not handle and allowed Lipski to score from second and put Wolf at third with one out. A squeeze bunt by junior Tyler Aholt was successfully executed to allow Wolf to cross the plate and cut the MU lead to 6-3.
Drew Schmidt led off the top of the fifth with a single and would score later in the inning after a Lipski groundout to make the score 7-4. Schmidt was pushed to third after Adam Pasono roped his fourth double of the season after the single by the freshman.
XU would notch its final run in the top of the ninth. Waskerwitz led off the inning with his team-leading sixth double of the season. Pasono singled to move Waskerwitz to third before a sacrifice fly by Lipski was deep enough to center to plate the senior but that would be all as two fly outs would end the game.
Waskerwitz led the way at the plate for the Blue and White as the senior finished 3-for-4 with his team-leading sixth double of the season. Pasono also had a multi-hit game as the sophomore ended 2-for-4 with his fourth double of the year. Lipski finished 1-for-4 at the plate with two of XU's four RBIs on the day. Roberts and Aholt also had an RBI for Xavier.
Senior Dan Graham got the start on the mound and took the loss after going 3.0 innings and allowing five earned on five hits with only one strikeout and five walks. Joe Kohler provided 2.0 innings of relief and allowed two earned on three hits with a strikeout. Mark Janszen came in to throw 2.1 innings before giving way to David Hartman for the final two outs. Hartman now as thrown 9.0 innings and allowed only one earned with a team-low 1.00 ERA and four strikeouts.
The Musketeers will have tomorrow off before returning to Hayden Field on Friday afternoon to open their Atlantic 10 schedule with rival Dayton. The first pitch is set for 2:30 pm with Xavier's Michael Lucas (0-4, 6.43 ERA) getting the start. Dayton will have senior lefty Chris Rubio (2-3, 5.91 ERA) on the mound.
