Musketeers in Third after Day One in Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - On a beautiful Virginia day, the Xavier women's golf team flew into third place on the wings of senior Kara Manis' first round three-over par 75.  Manis, tied for fourth place, currently leads the Musketeers at the 6,030 yard Marsh Hawk Course at Ford's Colony. 

First place Western Michigan (310, +22) stands only four strokes ahead of XU (314, +26).  Columbia University also stands in the path of a Xavier title, sitting in second place at 23-over.  The Musketeers held off Winthrop by a stroke and Boston College by three strokes to earn their current third place standing.

Manis was only three strokes off the day's best round and current tournament individual leader Laura Bavaird of Western Michigan.  Bavaird carded an even-par 72 for the day.

Senior Kathleen Hardy continues her impressive comeback from injury, finishing tied for 17th for the day at six-over.  Freshman Mary Beth McKenna stands a stroke behind Hardy at seven-over par in a tie for 21st place overall.  Coming off her third place finish at the Butler Spring Invitational last weekend as an individual, freshman Lindsay Steiner placed 39th at the end of first round action with a ten-over par 82.  Junior Diana Torry rounded out the Musketeer lineup a stroke behind Steiner at eleven-over par in a tie at 46th place.

The second and final round will commence tomorrow at 8 a.m.
