The Xavier University men's and women's track teams continued their record-breaking success at the Arizona State Invitational yesterday in Tempe, Arizona. Freshman Dani Meiners headlined the school-best performances with her finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Other record breakers include sophomores Becky Clark and Luke Beuerlein.
Meiners' lifetime-best time of 11:37.88 devastated the previous 3,000-meter steeplechase record, which had been standing since 2002. This time also earned Meiners a top ten finish in the event. Clark broke senior, Kelly Sraj's, 3,000-meter run record of 10:17, finishing in a lifetime-best 9:54.30.
Other noteworthy performances on the women's squad include sophomore Ashley Stick's finish in the 800-meter run, and Kelsey Flaherty's presentation in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Both women had lifetime-best runs in 2:21.53 and 12:00.55, respectively.
On the men's side Beuerlein broke the 3,000-meter run school record, previously held by junior Ben Milroy, finishing in 8:29.44. This time earned him a 12th place finish in a field of 26.
Sophomore Clinton Womack and freshman Michael Westendorp also had standout performances. Milroy finished the 3,000-meter run in 8:45.50. Womack finished the 800-meter run in 1:57.30 while Westendorp finished the 1,500-meter run in a lifetime-best 4:13.
The Xavier University men's squad will return to action when they compete in the Cedarville College Invitational. The men and women will run together again at the Oliver Nikoloff Invitational Saturday, April 7 in Cincinnati.
