CINCINNATI - A three-run homerun by Jordan Wolf gave Xavier the lead for good and helped the Musketeers remain undefeated at home as XU powered past visiting Ohio, 7-5, on Tuesday afternoon at Hayden Field. Wolf's homer capped a four-run fourth inning that helped Xavier move to 11-18 overall and maintain its current winning streak at seven games. With the loss, the Bobcats fall to 9-15 on the season.
With the game tied at 4-4, Wolf stepped to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the fourth and runners on first and third. The senior proceeded to take the 1-1 offering over the left field fence for his fifth homerun of the season and put the Musketeers in front for good at 7-4.
Runs were scored early and often over the first four innings before both pitching staffs threw perfect fifth through eighth innings. Ohio got on the board first with a one-out double by freshman Marc Krauss that scored Matt Stiffler to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead. After a scoreless first by XU, the Bobcats struck again with a sacrifice fly by Jeremie Rehak allowed Bryant Witt to score from third making it 2-0.
The Musketeers would finally get on the board in the home half of the second. Adam Lipski blasted a single through the left side with one out in the inning and proceeded to steal second during the next at-bat to put himself into scoring position. After a strikeout puts two outs on the board, sophomore Neil Lindgren flared a single down the right field line to allow Lipski to score and make it a 2-1 ballgame.
With two outs in the third, four straight singles turned into two runs crossing the plate as senior Drew Roberts drove a single into center to score Wolf and Steve Brown to cut the deficit to 4-3. The two RBIs by Roberts were XU's 51st and 52nd RBI with two outs this season.
Senior Mark Janszen (3-1, 5.25 ERA) came in to deal a shutout fourth inning to set up Wolf's heroics and Janszen continued to deal through 5.0 innings, allowing only three hits and one run to pick up his team-high third win of the season.
Freshman Zac Richard (3-2, 3 Saves, 5.80 ERA) came in to provide relief in the final inning and picked up his team-high third save of the season. The rookie dealt a perfect ninth, striking out one of the three batters he faced.
Ohio's Matt Smith suffered the loss and moves to 2-3 on the season as the lefty allowed all seven XU runs over his 4.0 innings.
Wolf led the way at the plate with a 2-for-4 day to go along with a homerun, three RBIs and two runs scored. Classmate Adam Lipski was also 2-for-4 in the game and scored a run. Brown would finish a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate with a walk, RBI and two runs scored, while Roberts ended the game 1-for-4 with two RBIs.
The Musketeers will get back to action tomorrow afternoon as the team travels north to face Bowling Green. The first pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Steller Field. Xavier's and Bowling Green's starters are still to be determined.
