Cincinnati - On the strength of two seniors, the Xavier volleyball team moved to a perfect 5-0 on the season after putting away Butler (1-3) in the team's 2007 home opener. Jenni Horvath posted a double-double (13 kills, 12 digs) and Jill Quayle notched a .462 hitting percentage (14-2-26) to lead XU to a 3-0 sweep of the Bulldogs.
In the first game, the Musketeers and Bulldogs kept the frame close. There were 11 ties in the game and Xavier trailed by as many as five points. An Xavier attacking error pulled Butler within one, 26-25, and XU called a timeout. The Blue and White would close the first game with a 4-0 run to collect the win. Junior Jenn Welsh led the team in assists dishing out 16 helpers in the frame.
Xavier never trailed in the second game and went on another 4-0 run, this time to pull ahead by nine. The Bulldogs would come within six points of the Musketeers but no closer as Xavier picked up the second-game victory, 30-22. Sophomore Kelly Ruth smashed four kills and posted a .400 hitting percentage for the frame.
The third game would go beyond the normal 30-point sign of victory as the winning team must win by two points. The final score of 33-31 was indicative of the battle that was the third game. Butler was not going away and never gave up, fighting through 10 ties during the frame and was never behind by more than four points. Yet, three consecutive kills by the Musketeers was enough to take the game and the match.
Welsh finished the match with 47 assists and Kelly and sophomore Lauren Kaminsky each had a game-high 13 digs. Junior Megan Hellman posted posted 10 digs on the day. The Musketeers return to action this weekend as they are set to host Delaware State, Eastern Michigan and Evansville in the aussie Xavier Invitational presented by the Vernon Manor Hotel Friday, Aug. 31, and Saturday, Sept.1.
