Xavier Volleyball Opens A-10 Play with Win

CINCINNATI - The Xavier volleyball team opened Atlantic 10 play at home Friday night with a 3-0 sweep of Duquesne (7-7, 0-1 A-10) in Cintas Center. The Musketeers were led by senior Jill Quayle who posted a .522 hitting percentage (14-2-23) for the night. Freshman Claire Paszkiewicz served up three aces on the night for the Blue and White to lead all servers.
Sophomore Kelly Ruth tallied a team-high 16 kills in the match for XU (10-5, 1-0 A-10), while sophomore Lauren Kaminsky posted a match-high 15 digs. Freshman Noelle Spitler saw her first action of the season, playing in the third game of the match, collecting one service ace and one assisted block.
Duquesne started all three games with the lead but Xavier continued to fight and claw its way to the 3-0 sweep. In game one XU did not take the lead until a kill by Kaminsky put the Musketeers up 16-15. From then on Xavier outscored their opponent 14-9 to close the frame with a six-point victory, 30-24.
After a block assist from Ruth and freshman Katie Russell put Xavier up 7-6 in the second game the Musketeers would not trail again in the frame. A 7-0 run by XU put the Musketeers ahead of the Dukes by eight, 22-14, putting the game out of reach for DU. Xavier took game two, 30-26.
The final game of the match started with a 4-1 Duquesne run and the Dukes would hold the lead until a kill by Ruth knotted the two at eight apiece. An assisted block by Quayle and Kaminsky gave Xavier the lead at 14-13 and although DU went ahead one more time, 17-16, the Musketeers were in it to win. XU took the final game, 30-23, and the match, 3-0.
The Dukes were led by Jenni Gross who posted a match-high 17 kills and Nicole Wright who tallied a team-high 11 digs.
