CINCINNATI - Two Musketeers registered double-double's in the Xavier volleyball team's 3-2 (23-25, 25-29, 22-25, 25-14, 16-14) win over Atlantic 10 foe Temple Saturday night at Cintas Center. Junior Lauren Kaminsky recorded a team-high 18 kills and was one dig away from a double-double herself with nine. This win is XU's sixth straight and the Musketeers remain unbeaten in conference play.
Senior Jenn Welsh (60A, 10D) and junior Kelly Ruth (17K, 11D) were the two Musketeers with double-double's while sophomore Claire Paszkiewicz tallied a career-high 25 digs in the contest. Junior Hillary Otte posted 15 kills and five assisted blocks. Sophomore Chelsea Campbell registered five assisted blocks as well while two other Musketeers had four assisted blocks as well.
The first set was close early but Temple (11-9, 4-3 A-10) rattled off four straight to take the 7-4 advantage. Xavier rallied and the two were knotted at 10 apiece before XU took over the lead at 13-11 on a service ace by Ruth. The Musketeers held the lead through most of the set and a kill from Otte at 22-20 caused the Owls to call a timeout. Out of the break, YU was on fire, closing the set with a 5-1 run to take the first frame, 25-23.
Xavier (9-7, 4-0 A-10) jumped out to the early 7-2 lead in the second set and never looked back. The lead stretched to nine, 15-6, when sophomore Shannon Wells recorded her first service ace as a Musketeer. The Owls got to within five at 24-19 but Kaminsky sealed the second-set win with a kill. Xavier tied the match with the 25-29 win.
The third set was close throughout as neither team got ahead by more than one until Temple used a 4-0 run to go up, 14-10. Xavier used its own 4-0 run to tie the set again at 14-all and the two traded points until XU's three-point spurt gave the Musketeers the 20-17 advantage late in the set. Temple would rally, though, and take the third frame, 25-22.
With the 2-1 lead, Temple tried to close out the match with the fourth-set win but Xavier would not give up. After getting behind 5-2 early in the set, XU rallied to take the 11-5 lead on a service ace from Paszkiewicz. Temple would not recover as Xavier's late 5-0 run stretched the lead to 11, 23-12, and the Musketeers didn't look back. XU took the fourth set, 25-14, to force the fifth set.
In the deciding game, TU again went up 5-2 to start the set. Xavier trailed through most of the frame and find itself down by four at 13-9. Three consecutive Owl attack errors and a kill from Kaminsky got the Musketeers right back in the game and at 13-13 Temple called its last timeout. Yun Yi Zhang had the Owls at match point, 14-13, with a kill but the Musketeers rattled off three straight to take the set, 16-14, and the match 3-2.
The Owls were led by Zhang with a match-high 26 kills and Ariel Pierre with a team-high 16 digs.
