DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Xavier University women’s golf team played host this weekend at the LPGA International Xavier Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Musketeers concluded the weekend in 14th overall, finishing ten strokes ahead of Bowling Green State and two strokes behind Mercer.
Yale University headed into the second round in fourth place but posted a tournament-low 296, vaulting them into first going into the final round. The Bulldogs remained consistent, recording a 301 to finish as the team winner over Florida Atlantic by one stroke and Eastern Michigan by three.
Lamar’s Therese Nilsson fired rounds of 72-72-71 to finish one-under par as this year’s medalist.
Xavier was stricken with uncharacteristically inconsistent play in the face of difficult playing conditions on the Legends Course. A series of severe storms, including tornado warnings a day before the first round, presented a difficult challenge for competitors.
Mary Beth McKenna led XU with rounds of 77-81-77 (235, +19), earning her a tie for 34th place overall. McKenna’s performance included 38 pars, the tournaments eighth-best total.
Sophomore Rachel Levi was a rallying force for Xavier, posting the Musketeer’s best round of the tournament (75) to boost the team past Bowling Green State. She finished the tournament with scores of 81-83-75 (239, +23), tying at 44th.
Freshman Michelle Winkler was a model of consistency for Xavier on a weekend of score fluctuations. Her rounds of 80-82-80 earned her a tie for 49th at 26-over.
Senior Lindsay Cornell and sophomore Audrey Fellmeth struggled to find a rhythm during the weekend on the 6,045 yard course. Cornell finished at 34-over par in 66th, five strokes ahead of Fellmeth, who finished in 69th at 39-over.
Xavier individuals Colette Ryan and Lindsay Steiner were paired together for the tournament. Steiner finished in 75th at 49-over par while Ryan earned 76th place at 81-over.
The team would like to thank those family members that were able to attend the event and support them. The Musketeers will return to tournament play next weekend at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate in Greenville, N.C.
