Xavier (1-0) opened the 2008-2009 season with a 71-43 win against Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (0-1). The Musketeers were led by C.J Anderson with 15 points. Kenny Frease added 12 points and Jamel McLean chipped in 10 points. McLean grabbed 10 rebounds and Anderson snared 9 boards, Brad Redford had 3 assists, and Frease and McLean each had three blocks. IPFW was led by Trey McCorkle with 10 points, David Carson with 6 rebounds, and Zach Plackemeier with 2 assists.
With tonight’s victory, Xavier won its 19th straight regular season opener (18 at home and one on the road). The last time XU lost its season opener was in the 1989-90 “Sweet 16” season to Southern Utah State, 97-90, on December 2, 1989, at Cincinnati Gardens.
Xavier extended its home winning streak to 11 games with tonight’s victory. The Musketeers were 16-1 last season at home. XU is now 107-16 (.870) all-time in its ninth season at its on-campus arena. The Musketeers are 53-6 (.790) during that span against non-conference opponents.
The 14 first-half points scored by IPFW were the fewest in a half by a Xavier opponent since November 29, 1993, when XU took a 54-14 lead into the half at Cincinnati Gardens. Xavier went on to win that contest, 97-49.
Jamel McLean recorded the first double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) by a Musketeer in a season opener since Brian Thornton scored 14 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in 69-58 win against Oakland on November 19, 2004.
Leading 10-7 at 13:34 of the first half, XU went on a 23-2 run to take a 33-9 lead at 3:07. Freshman Terrell Holloway led the charge with 5 points, with C.J. Anderson and B.J. Raymond adding 4 points apiece. Xavier held the Mastodons scoreless for nearly eight minutes (from 10:08 until 2:17).
